Laois writers group

Laois writers group will meet on Tuesday, February 7, in County Hall from 7 to 9pm.

If you’re thinking of taking up writing for 2006, do come along. The Laois Anthology, launched before Christmas, is now on sale in bookshops and features many poems, articles and stories by Laois writers.

Fashion Show

A fashion show in aid of the National Council for the Blind tandem challenge is being held on Thursday, February 23, at 8pm in Mountmellick Sports Complex. There will be a cheese and wine reception. Admission: Adults €10, senior citizens and children €6. Tickets are available from O’Gorman Newsagents, Patrick Street. This will be a great night out in support of a very worthy cause.

Computer Training Courses

The following computer training courses will be available at MDA Irishtown absolute beginners Microsoft Office, ECDL level 1, ECdL advanced word processing, internet and e-mail, accounts, PC maintenance and one to one tuition. For further enquiries contact Imelda Burke.

The Rock GAA Club

There is a table quiz in aid of The Rock NS development fund in Turley’s Bar on Friday, February 3, at 9.30pm sharp. It is in aid of a fantastic cause. All are welcome, please attend.

Charity Shop

The Charity Shop in Parnell Street will be open each week on Thursdays from 10am to 3pm.

Grow Group

A Grow Group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experiences depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company you are welcome to come along.

You will have an opportunity to meet others, share your problems in confidence, receive support and make new friends. All welcome. Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown, at 3pm on Monday. For further information please contact Harriet Website: www.grow.ie.

Jazz Ballet Classes

Classes are being held every Wednesday in Mountmellick Macra Hall - u-10s from 5-6 m and 10 years and over from 6-7pm. Contact Michelle for details.

Money Advice

MABS - the money advice and budgeting service - will be running an outreach service at MDA on the first Thursday of every month from 10am to 12.30pm. No appointments needed.

Laois Citizens Information Service

Is in attendance every Wednesday at MDA, Irishtown, from 10am to noon or may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing, or any related problem are welcome to attend.

Macra

Congratulations to the Capers team who won their way into the All-Ireland final on Saturday night, January 22. Teams from Laois Kildare, Meath and Louth competed on the night. A great performance was put in on the night with Mountmellick picking up two awards.

Michelle Murphy won best producer while Ann Claire Rochford won best actress on the night. The Capers team will now compete in the final in Louth on February 4.

Macra members attended a table quiz in Abbeyleix on Friday night in Morrissey’s. A great night was had by all and Macra were runners up after a sudden death tie breaker.

Business Mountmellick

The AGM of Business Mountmellick was held on Monday, January 23. The outgoing chairperson Peter McElwee, presented a report on the work done by the group during 2005, in particular their continued monitoring of the proposed ring road and the parking bye laws that are being mooted.

Compliments were extended to Margaret Broadford in particular, the group as a whole and to the general public of Mountmellick and surrounding areas for their support during the recent fundraising efforts for the East Africa project, where over €30,000 was raised.

The incoming comittee is: Chairperson, Kathy McGlynn; assistant chairperson, Fergal Conroy; trasurer, Peter McElwee; assistant treasurer, Martin Morris; secretary, Janet Stewart; assistant secretary, Michael Dowling; pro, Ger Dunne.

On accepting the chair, Kathy advised that every effort would be made to gain the support of as many Mountmellick businesses as possible.

Community Care Association Christmas Dinner Party

The community care association organised their annual Christmas dinner party in the Hazel Hotel on Sunday, January 23. It was a most enjoyable ocasion with 85 people in attendance.

The cake was cut by Mrs Nan Tuohy and Paddy Daly. Peter Smith and the Brewers provided the lively music while Tommy O’Brien was MC for the evening.

Mountmellick Community Care Association began in March 1973 and the present committee members are: Brigid O’Brien, Rose O’Reilly, Ursula B Curran Eileen Daly, Claire Conroy and Gus McGlynn.
