Minor Hurling
Congratulations to Michael Bermingham on making the starting line-up for Laois minors, Bernard Rochford is not far off the mark and, hopefully, his chance will come soon. These are two up and coming talented young hurlers.
Sympathy
There was deep regret at the news of the death of Tom McDonald of Brittas and Derryguile at the regional hospital, Portlaoise, on Tuesday, April 6. Tom will be missed by all who knew him. Removal from the hospital to St. Joseph’s Church took place on Holy Thursday evening via Primrose Lane and Brittas. Requiem Mass was celebrated at 7.30 that evening. Funeral service was held at noon on Good Friday with burial afterwards in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to Tom’s nieces, nephew, family, relatives and friends on their bereavement.
Sarsfields LFC
The seniors had their second championship outing recently when they travelled to Shanahoe on Friday, April 9, to face the locals. In a very tense encounter during which fortunes swayed from side to side, the game ended all square, Sarsfields 1-10 Shanahoe 2-7. In general, the players were disappointed not to have won the game but a draw was a creditable outcome considering the erratic nature of the team’s preparation over the past few weeks. A number of players were unavailable due to illness while others are presently carrying niggling injuries.
Two of last year’s under-14 squad, Laura Quigley and Claire O’Loughlin, made their championship debuts and both players acquitted themselves extremely well.
Others to shine were Caroline Bermingham, Grace Weston, Mary Hyland, Mags McEvoy, Clare Conlon and Emer O’Loughlin. Team: Caroline Bermingham, Mary Hyland, Grace Weston, Laura Quigley, Fiona Whelan, Mags McEvoy, Patrice Deffew, Emma McEvoy, Ann Marie Hourigan, Claire O’Loughlin 0-1, Ciara O’Loughlin 0-6, Emer O’Loughlin, Clare Conlon 0-2, Aileen O’Loughlin 1-0, Aoife Cleary 0-1. Subs: Deirdre Halley and Lisa O’Reilly.
