Special Olympics Ireland fundraiser

A table quiz to raise funds for the above will be held in The Mellick Inn tonight, Wednesday, at 9.30pm.

Michael Linehan will be the quiz master on the night. Table of four 20. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Afternoon Dance

The Active Retirement Group are holding an afternoon dance in ICA Hall on Sunday, November 21 from 3pm to 6pm. Admission is 5 including light refreshments. The proceeds are going to help Ann Conroy, Derrycloney who is going to Japan in February for two weeks to work as a volunteer with the Special Olympics teams.

Photographic Exhibition

Mountmellick Photographic Society will hold their annual exhibition in the Macra Hall, Patrick Street on Saturday, November 20 from 12 noon to 8pm and on Sunday November 21 from 12 noon to 6pm. Admission is free and all are welcome along.

The society thanks all who supported their recent table quiz in The Mellick Inn. This is the societies 15th anniversary and their 14th exhibition. It will feature both slides and photographs including landscapes, still life, portraiture, nature and sports.

Presentation

There will be a presentation to the Presentation Sisters to mark their 150th anniversary on Friday, November 19. Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church at 7.30pm, followed by a social and presentation in the Owenass Hall with music and refreshments.

Mountmellick Women’s Group

The above would like to thank Paul Lalor from Mountmellick Photographic Society for his demonstration/information evening on October 21 last, it was most enjoyable.

Two more good evenings are coming up: aromatherapy with Lily McGuirk and Christmas flower arranging with Pat Cooper. The aromatherapy is on Thursday, November 18 and the Christmas flower arranging is on Thursday, December 2. The group is still looking for new members, come along and bring a friend. All happening in the Methodist Hall beside the Town Hall.

St. Paul’s Annual Sale

The above is being held on Saturday, November 20 from 10.30am to 3pm in The Old School, Pearse St. The stalls will include cakes, bric-a-brac, books, teas, a raffle and more. Your support would be appreciated by the committee.

Cub Scouts

Meetings have begun for the winter programme in the Owenass Hall on Thursday nights from 7pm to 8.30pm. The boys recently made Halloween crafts as part of their artist badge and are now starting the first aid badge over the coming weeks under the tutelage of Nurse Paul Harding who is a past scout himself. There are some places available for eight year old boys who may be interested in joining before Christmas.

Jazz Ballet Classes

The above classes are being held every Wednesday in Mountmellick Macra Hall. Under 10s from 5pm to 6pm and 10 years and over from 6pm to 7pm.

Cemetery Committee

The above group thank everyone who contributed to their annual church gate collection on Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14. Your generosity was appreciated.

Laois Citizens Information Service

The above is in attendance every Wednesday at MDA Irishtown from 10am to noon or else may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related problems are welcome to attend.

Grow Group

A Grow Group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experiences depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company, come along.

You will have an opportunity to meet others, share your problems in confidence, get support and make new friends. All are welcome. Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown at 3pm on Monday. For further information please contact Harriet.

Late Breda Moss

The death on Thursday, November 4 of Breda Moss at the General Hospital, Portlaoise following a long illness occasioned much grief. Breda was held in high esteem by all who knew her and will be most sadly missed. Removal from her residence in Derrycloney took place to St. Joseph’s Church on Saturday morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St. Joseph’s cemetery. Breda is mourned by her husband Jim, her daughters Catherine, Edelle and Eileen, her sons Tom, Brian and Alan, family, relatives and friends to whom the deepest sympathy of the community is extended on their bereavement.

Late Patrick Mcdonagh

The death occurred of Patrick McDonagh of Irishtown following an accident on Monday, November 1. His remains were removed from Portlaoise General Hospital to St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Portlaoise on Thursday, November 4. Requiem Mass was celebrated at 10am on Friday morning with burial afterwards to St. Joseph’s cemetery, Mountmellick. Patrick is mourned by his wife Marie, sons Joseph and John, mother Nancy, family, relatives and many friends to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended.

Sinn Fein News

The trip to Belfast, which includes visits to various historical sites, is going ahead on the last weekend in November. Also the 2005 Republican Resistance Calendar is now available and as 2005 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sinn Fein, this years calendar contains both historical and topical illustrations. Anyone interested please contact John Nelson. A commemoration for the Manchester Martyrs takes place in Birr on Sunday, November 21.
