Play tennis this summer

Summer training for 4-6 years and 6-14 years continues on Friday afternoons.

Training will combine matches, skills competitions and technical instruction. A tennis and multi sport camp for 4-12 year-olds is being held next week. This will include professional tennis coaching, co-ordination circuits and fun team sports and competitions. If you are interested in learning to play tennis this summer you are welcome to come along to any of the tennis club’s activities or phone Bryan.

Summer Camp

A summer camp began on Monday July 5 at Naionra Naomh Aine, Garoon, Mountmellick and continues throughout the summer. The camp is available to children aged three to seven years, from 10 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday. For further information please contact Mary Culleton.

Grow Group

A Grow Group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experienced depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company do come along.

You will have an opportunity to meet others, share your problems in confidence get support and make new friends. All are welcome.

Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown at 3 pm every Monday. For further information please contact Harriet.

Laois Citizens Information Service

The above is in attendance every Wednesday at MDA Irishtown from 10 am to noon or else may be contacted at the Portlaoise office.

Anyone who would like help with tax, problems social welfare entitlements, heath, housing or any related problem are welcome to attend.

Juvenile Soccer: Training for all girls under 9 takes in Smith’s field on Tuesday evenings at 6 pm. All under 9 girls are welcome along.

Jazz Ballet Dance Class

The above classes are being held every Wednesday in Mountmellick Macra Hall. Under 10s from 5 pm to 6 pm and 10 years and over from 6 pm to 7 pm. Contact Michelle for details.

Presentation

A presentation to Fr Joseph Whittle on his retirement will be held in the Owenass Hall on Friday September 10 (please note change of date). Envelopes will be distributed and will also be available in St Josephs Church for any person who wishes to make a donation to the presentation.

Playschool

Busy Bees is open throughout the summer for both morning and afternoon sessions for children aged from 2 years upwards.

Summer Club

There will be a summer club with games, stories, craft, drama and lots more in Mountmellick Methodist Church Hall from Monday July 12 to Friday July 16 from 3 pm to 5 pm each day.

Children from 5 to 12 years are welcome along, there is no charge. For more details please contact Ann.

Irish Dancing

Best wishes to Laura, Jennifer and Ellen O’Shea who will be part of the Shanahan Folk Dance Group representing Ireland at the Brunssum folk festival taking place in the Netherlands from 15th to 25th July. they won the u-13 eight hand championship at the Leinster Championship in the Helix in Dublin and also received 4th place in the All Ireland International Dance Championships in the West County Ennis this year.

GAA News

Intermediate football following on from their great display against Timahoe last week, Mountmellicks footballers faced up to a crucial tie against Crettyard on Saturday night, July 3. At stake was a place in the semi final and to their credit the team rose to the occasion and produced another top class performance. The game was slow to settle but Mountmellick got the first two points but then conceded four without reply.

Mountmellick got back into the game and scored an all important goal when Niall Lunch finished to the net just before half time to leave the town side ahead by 1-5 to 0-5.

In the second half Mountmellick produced their best football and took firm control of the match and notched up some valuable scores and led by six point at one stage. A late Crettyard goal reduced the lead but Mountmellick were good value for their win by 1-10 to 1-7. Once again this was a workman like performance in which all the team played their part.

They have now qualified for the semi-final where they will come up against Courtwood sometime in the future. U-16 football: Mountmellicks u-16 footballers qualified for the division 1 league final last Tuesday as they recorded a win over Ballylinan Glannmore by 0-9 to 0-5. This was a hard earned win but they showed great commitment and this saw them through in the end. All in Mountmellick wish them the best of luck in the final and in the upcoming championship.

In preparation for the forthcoming championship the u-16 footballers played a good challenge game against Moorefield on Thursday night last.

The minor footballers also played Stradbally in a challenge next week check fixtures.

Flag Day

Mountmellick Juvenile GAA had a bucket collection over the weekend which was a great success. Thanks to the collectors and the organisers and especially to the people of the town who game so generously.

GAA Summer Camp

Time is now counting down to the Playstation Laois GAA summer camp which takes place in Parc Acragar Mountmellick over 4 days from July 20 to 23. This cover football and hurling for national school boys and girls. For 35 they will receive top class coaching with skills and games. Each participant will get a sports kit and the highlight of the camp will be visits from guest stars. Applications can be made on the day don’t miss the best camp around.
