Same old drama for Pioneers
Mountmellick Pioneer drama group present Same Old Mon in the concert hall on Thursday (15th), Friday (16th) and Sunday, April 18, at 8.30pm nightly.
This is an hilarious comedy with some moments of sadness. Proceeds will go to The Rock NS. Tickets - 7 adults, 4 students and concessions (family rates available at the door) are available from O’Gorman’s and the Owenass Stores and at the door.
Race Against Waste Project
St Joseph’s GNS would like to thank the following - Maura Williams, Chris O’Brien, Michelle Murphy, Eithne Farrell, Ann Heffernan, Aileen O’Neill, Dympna McEvoy, Evelyn Burke, Adrian Coss, Ann Mortimer and Rose Turner for their help with this project. Is in attendance every Wednesday at the MDA, Irishtown, from 10am to noon or may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related problem is welcome to attend.
Grow Group
A Grow group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experiences depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company do come along. You will have an opportunity to meet others, share problems in confidence, get support and make new friends. All are welcome. Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown, at 3pm every Monday. Sympathy
There was regret at the news of the death of Anthony Hyland of The Bornass at St. Claire’s Nursing Home, Ballinderry, Mullingar, on Sunday, March 28. Anthony was pre-deceased by his wife, Kathleen, and his passing will be regretted by many. Removal from his residence at The Bornass to St. Joseph’s Church took place on Monday evening. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 11am with burial afterwards in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Anthony is mourned by his sons, daughters, brother, family, relatives and friends, to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.
Late Kitty Breen
The death of Kitty Breen, O’Moore Street, on Sunday, April 4, at the regional hospital, Portlaoise, following a short illness, occasioned much grief. Kitty, a music teacher until her illness, was an outgoing and friendly person, known to many. She will be remembered by her neighbours, friends, pupils and parents. Removal from the hospital to St. Joseph’s Church took place on Monday evening via O’Moore Street. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 11am followed by burial afterwards in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Kitty is mourned by her cousins, neighbours, relatives, friends and pupils, to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.

GAA News
Under-16 football - Mountmellick had a good win over Portarlington on Monday, March 29. They settled into the game from the start and produced some great passages of play and clocked up an impressive 4-12 to Portarlington’s 1-4. Team: Conor O’Shea, Jason Hogan 1-1, Darren McDermott, Eoghan O’Neill, Ciaran Rochford, Niall Gorman, Sean Culliton, David Tynan 0-1, Colm Cross 0-1, Shane Shortall, Diarmuid Flaherty 1-4, Gary Kirwan 0-1, Brian Whelan, Eoin Gorman 1-4, Kevin Donoher 1-0, Michael Carroll, Shane Carter, Ronan Dempsey.
The game against O’Dempseys as well as the u-16 hurling v. Ballyfin were both cancelled as a mark of respect to John Flaherty of Gort, father of Gerry, who was laid to rest on Monday. All in Mountmellick GAA club wish to express their sympathy with the family. The u-16 football match v. O’Dempseys is now on Thursday night at 6.30pm in Acragar.
Intermediate Football
Mountmellick picked up their third win in the league when they defeated Clonaslee/St. Manmans on a score of 1-10 to 1-9 in a keenly contested game on Wednesday, March 24, in Clonaslee. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday night and the juniors are expected to come along as well.
Páirc Acragar is a busy place nearly every night at the moment with all teams in training and playing matches. All youngsters in the town are urged to come along and take part in football and hurling where all age groups are expertly catered for in top class facilities.
Mountmellick played host to two Roscommon teams recently with the minor footballers playing Laois in a challenge and their ladies also taking on Laois.
Divine Mercy Sunday
There will be special devotions in St. Joseph’s Church on Sunday, April 18, at 3pm with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Everyone welcome.
Sarsfields
Well done from all at the club to Laura Quigley, Siobhán Fitzpatrick and Claire O’Loughlin who were members of the Laois under-16 team who recorded a big win over Meath in Portlaoise on Saturday, April 3, on a score of 4-15 to 1-5.
