GAA News

Mountmellick GAA Club extend its congratulations to Conor Glynn, winner of the car in the Laois GAA Draw and to Brian Dempsey, winner of 200. Well done to both. Football-Mountmellick’s junior footballers played their opening round of the championship against near neighbours Emo at Parc Acragar on Thursday night, May 27. Emo had wind assistance in the first half and led at the interval on a score of 0-5 to 0-4. Mountmellick were happy enought with this situation as they had defended well and created many chances on their own. As the second half progressed Mountmellick got on top in all sectors and kicked some outstanding scores from all angles to win by 0-16 to 0-5.

This was a good team effort with some brilliant individual performances. Ross Morrissey dealt capably with everything that came his way. The full back line of Gearoid Horan, Ken Young and Martin Connolly defended bravely with Gearoid dominating his area.

The half back line consisting of Emmett Goode, Ciaran O’Mahony and Eddie Morris were very effective and set up many of the attacks. At midfield Tomas Gormley was outstanding with his young partner Bernard Rochford linking up to produce some top class scores. The two wing forwards of Lee Collins and Paul Stapleton were a thorn in the Emo defence as they ran at them all night with centre forward Tom Dalton showing great positional sense.

Cormac Hannon and David Forde worked tire-lessly in the corners with full forward Eoin Culliton in rampant mood to end up top scorer on the night. This was a very encouraging performances and keeps the show going into the summer. The subs of Michael Ward, Tomas Fitzgibbon, Ciaran McGuirk and Ciaran Dickenson also played their part. We now look forward to their next match.

Scorers-Eoin Culleton 0-7, Bernard Rochford 0-6, Ciaran O’Mahony 0-1, Lee Collins 0-1 and David Forde 0-1. U15 football-Laois UI5 footballers defeated Offaly in a challenge game on Saturday, May 29 in Daingean. Well done to John O’Loughlin who was outstanding at centre back and Jason Hogan. Conor O’Shea missed out through injury.
