Art exhibition/craft fair
ACORN Integrated Art Group. Mountmellick Traveller Group and Mountmellick Development Association Social Inclusion are holding an art exhibition and craft fair in MDA Museum, Irishtown, Mountmellick on today (Wednesday) from 2pm to 8pm.

FINE GAEL Christmas Party
The above are holding their Christmas Party in The Mellick Inn on Friday, December 17 at 9pm. A buffet will be served and there will be great Christmas music.
Tickets for the party cost 10 and can be obtained from Larry Ryan, Audrey Whelan, Margaret Bradford, Jim le Blanc, Cllr Bobby Delaney, Cllr Rosemary Whelan.
Parish Draw
Mountmellick parish annual draw in aid of parish funds will take place on Sunday, December
19. Tickets are now available from the parish office in St. Joseph’s Church or from any committee member.
Mountmellick GAA Club News
Tickets are now on sale for the 2005 Laois GAA Club members draw and your support is requested. This is an excellent draw as well as an important fundraiser for our club.
There are five draws beginning on January 28 with over €100,000 in prizes, including a first prize of €10,000 each month. Tickets are €130 and can be paid off monthly at €26 a time. They are on sale from any committee member and team managers.
Jazz Ballet Classes
The above classes are being held every Wednesday in Mountmellick Macra Hall. Under 10’s from 5-6pm and 10 years and over from 6-7pm. Contact Michelle for details.
Laois Citizens Information Service
The above is in attendance every Wednesday at MDA Irishtown from 10am to noon or else may e contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related problems are welcome to attend.
Sinn Fein News
Cumann members attended a fundraiser for the Columbia 3 in The Volunteer in Kilbeggan on Saturday night. A good night was had by all. Funds raised go to the expenses of the Columbia 3 who are still prevented from leaving Columbia despite a not guilty verdict.
The 2005 Republican Resistance Calendar is now available and as 2005 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sinn Fein, this year’s calendar contains both historical and topical illustrations. Anyone interested please contact John Nelson.
Green Flag Raising
Mountmellick Community School celebrated their award of a Green Flag with an official flag raising on Friday, December 3. The students and staff were joined by invited guests including guest of honour Minister of Education Mary Hanafin TD for the ceremony in the community sports centre.
School principal and MC Eric Gaughran welcomed all present, congratulated the Green Schools committee and all in the school and introduced JP O’Mahony, the inspector from An Taisce who awarded the Green Flag. JP O’Mahony highly commended everyone in the school on their efforts and achievements.
Then Minister for Education Mary Hanafin TD added her words of praise and congratulations. Finally chairperson of the Green Schools committee fourth year student Joseph Dunne thanked everyone involved, including all the staff, the students and the invited guests. Green schools committee member Jamie Lalor presented Mary Hanafin TD with a bouquet before the participants adjourned to the front school grounds to officially raise the flag.
The group also visited the memorial garden which has been the most recent project undertaken by the Green Schools committee with great input from the rest of the school students and staff and caretaker Noel Dalton and David Hayden of Irishtown Garden Centre and electrician Andy Molloy. The garden is in memory of all deceased students and staff of Mountmellick Community School and of St. Mary’s College. Refreshments were then served. Following this vice chairperson of the Green Schools committee presented Ms. Edel Leonard and Ms. Fiona Behan of the Green Schools committee presented Ms. Edel Leonard and Ms. Fiona Behan, teachers on the committee with gifts in thanks for all their work.
The Green Schools initiative was first begun in Mountmellick Community School four years ago by teachers Ms. Catherine McCarthy and Ms. Una Wafer. It has grown from a very small group to quite a large committee with many helpers being called upon as needed. Their achievement was accomplished with the co-operation of all in the school and they extend their gratitude to them all.

Grow Group
A Grow Group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experienced depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company of come along.
You will have an opportunity to meet others, share your problems in confidence, get support and make new friends. All are welcome.
Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown at 3pm on Monday. For further information please contact Harriet.
Parish Office
There is a large assortment of religious Christmas cards, Mass bouquets, cribs, advent calendars and Christmas gifts available to purchase in the office. Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 11am to 1pm and each afternoon except Wednesdays from 3pm to 5pm.
Musical Instruments
Mountmellick Comhaltas would like to ask anyone who has unwanted musical instruments to consider donating them to Comhaltas for the use of children who are beginning music lessons. If you can help please contact Brian Furlong or Mary Bridget Culleton. Adults music classes have started in the sports complex on Tuesday nights from 9pm to 9.45pm.
