Under-12s - A Team To Watch

The under-12 footballers played their first league match against Killeshin on Saturday, March 27.

Killeshin proved much stronger and ran out easy winners - a team to watch this year. Mountmellick would like to thank them for their hospitality.

The under-14 footballers played Portarlington in Acragar on Sunday, March 28. This was a very good game with great performances from both sides and the final score was a draw - 4-4 to 3-7. Team: R. Dempsey, C. Hyland, D. Kenny, B. Forde, G. Fitzpatrick, E. Melia, R. Cashera, G. Dowling, P. Dunne, K. Donoher, B. George, D. Whelan, R. Dowling, R. Bishop, D. Hanlon.

Training days and times for the coming year: Under-8, 10 and 12 footballs on Thursdays from 7 to 8.15pm; u-12 hurling is on Wednesdays from 6.30 to 8pm and on Sundays from 11.30am to 1pm; undert-14 football and hurling is on Mondays from 7.30 to 8.30pm; u-16 football, Wednesdays, 6.45pm and Sundays at 11am.

Retirement Group

The group has just completed an art course and have done some lovely pictures. They displayed them in the exhibition in the MDA during disability awareness week and they were admired by all. The group members are enjoying swimming lessons in the pool in Portlaoise which is great exercise. They are planning day trips for the coming months and are looking up the brochures to see the most interesting places to visit. They have also started a lotto syndicate and hope to hit the jackpot and then they’re off to see the world.

Tennis Club

The club is running a tennis and multi-sport camp from Tuesday, April 13 to Friday, April 16, for four to 12-year-olds. There will be two camps, one for four to six-year-olds and one for six to 12-year-olds. These camps will combine instruction with loads of fun activities for all participants. It will be possible to either book for one day or for the full camp. Anyone interested contact Bryan.

Fit Club

The fit club continues on Tuesdays in the Owenass hall - 5-7 years at 3.3o-m and 8-12 years at 5.35pm. Contact Bryan with enquiries.

Citizen’s Info

In attendance every Wednesday at the MDA, Irishtown, from 10am to noon or may be contacted at the Portlaoise office, 0502-21425. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related issue is welcome to attend.

Grow Group

A Grow group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experiences depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company do come along. You will have an opportunity to meet others, share problems in confidence, get support and make new friends. All are welcome. Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown, at 3pm every Monday. GAA News

Mountmellick footballers had a busy weekend recently with both the intermediate and junior teams in action. The intermediate team played Annanough in a good open game on Saturday evening, March 27, at Páirc Acragar. The home side conceded an early goal but quickly recovered and held a commanding lead for the rest of the game. However, Annanough kept them in check and played their part in an entertaining game. Final score: Mountmellick 3-12 Annanough 3-7. Team: Donie O’Mahony, Ciaran O’Mahony, Darren Young, Niall Molloy, Michael Lawlor, Mark Turner, David Ryan, Shane Conlon 0-5, Willie Whelan 1-0, Niall Lynch 0-4, Darragh Hanlon, Aidan Challoner, James Donoher 1-1, Eoin Culleton 1-2, Tom Minehan. Subs: David Forde, John Lawlor, Tomás Gormley.

On Sunday, March 28, the junior team played Stradbally and after a keenly contested game they lost by one point with the final score Stradbally 1-7 Mountmellick 0-9. The team showed great character and were unlucky not to at least share the spoils.

Mountmellick GAA club wish to congratulate John O’Loughlin on his great sporting achievements recently. He played a leading role when his school, Cistercian College, Roscrea, won the Leinster senior B hurling championship and will contest the all-Ireland semi-final next week. ot one to rest on his laurels, he featured prominently as his school won the Godfrey cup in rugby. Not a bad two weeks for this talented Mountmellick clubman at only 15 years of age.

Scór: Well done to Emer Dunne of Graigue, Mountmellick, who represented Mountmellick GAA club in the senior singing section at the Leinster Scór finals in Tachman, Wexford, last week. After winning the qualifying heats she finished a close second in the final.

Sarsfields LFC

No less than six club players were involved in the third level ladies football finals played in Galway recently. In the Lynch cup semi-final, Carlow IT lost out to DCU who went on to win the final against Athlone IT. On the Carlow team were Grace Weston, Grace O’Neill and Emer O’Loughlin. In the semi-final of the premier competition, the O’Connor cup holders UCD with Ciara O’Loughlin on boardlost out to the University of Limerick who had Caroline Bermingam and Aileen O’Loughlin in their lineout. In the final, UL recorded an impressive victory over Maynooth 4-7 to 2-6 after which Aileen received the player of the tournament award for her contribution to the success.

On Sunday, March 28, Sarsfields seniors opened their campaign with a tough assignment against last year’s champions, Timahoe. Despite the fact that club training has been a little disrupted due to outside commitments, the team on duty put up a gutsy fight before going down by a point. It was a game that Sarsfields should have won.

Down by four at the break, 0-4 to 1-5, Sarsfields dominated the second half. They added seven points but just failed to find the clincher. Scorers: Ciara O’Loughlin 0-6, Claire Conlon 0-4, Emer O’Loughlin 0-1. Team: Caroline Bermingham, Mary Hyland, Deirdre Halley, Aoife Lawlor, Fiona Whelan, Mags McEvoy, Patrice Deffew, Emma McEvoy, Ann Marie Hourigan, Aoife Cleary, Ciara O’Loughlin, Emer O’Loughlin, Clare Conlon, Aileen O’Loughlin, Fionnuala Cleary. Building For The Future

St. Joseph’s GNS are collecting the Irish Independent newspapers “Building for the Future” tokens. The school is short 70 books. If anyone has tokens please leave them in to the secretary at St. Joseph’s GNS, Davitt Road, Mountmellick. They will be much appreciated.

Christina Noble

Eithne Farrell has so far raised €6,000 for the Christina Noble children’s walk. She will be holding a jumble sale in May and would appreciate any donations for same.
