Youth theatre presents two dramas

Mountmellick Youth Theatre present two dramas on Saturday night, May 8, at 8 pm in Mountmellick Macra hall.

These young actors, under the direction of Helen Cullen, have been rehearsing every Saturday since Christmas to ensure a great night’s entertainment.

On Saturday they present the comedy The Actor’s Nightmare and Shakespearian skit A Midsummer’s Nightmare, both guaranteed to have the audience laughing. Admission is adults 8 and concessions 5.

Those taking part are Louise Blanche, Ailish Carey, Niamh Carey, Stephen Cullen, Christian Cullen, Lorraine Curham, Nicola Dease, Sarah Dunne, JJ Hills, Stacey Kelly, Aine O’Neill, Eoghan O’Neill, Amanda Quigley, Niamh Ryan, Kenny Stapleton and Kevin Toland.

Fashion Show

Models take to the catwalk tonight (Wednesday) at 8 pm in the concert hall in aid of St Vincent’s Hospital Patients Benefit Fund. A wide variety of styles from No 1 Boutique will be on view to suit all occasions this spring and summer, from the most casual holiday wear to the most glamourous wed-ding.

Tickets are available from No 1 Boutique, from St Vincent’s Hospital and at the door tonight. Please come along and lend your support to a most worthwhile cause and have a most enjoyable evening.

Pioneers

Mountmellick pioneers are proud to announce the return of ‘Same Old Moon’ in the concert hall on Friday May 7 at 8.30 pm.

The proceeds are in aid of the oncology unit in the Regional Hospital Portlaoise. Your support for this very worthy cause would be much appreciated.

Tennis Club

The summer coaching programme is now under way on Friday afternoons. This will include a choice of coaching, training and matches over eight weeks. Adult’s club night continues on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Adults interested in keeping fit during the summer are welcome to attend. Due to the success of the tennis fun day, all 6 to 12 year olds are welcome to take part in the training on Tuesday evening next week at 6.45 pm. For more details contact Bryan at 086 3821614.

Castlebrack Cemetery

The rosary will be recited in Castlebrack cemetery on Sunday evenings at 7 pm during the month of May. Everybody is welcome along.

Clonaghadoo NS: Enrolment of new pupils for September 2004 will take place in the school on Friday, May 7 from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Laois Citizens Information Service

The above is in attendance every Wednesday at MDA Irishtown from 10 am to noon or else may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like to help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related problem are welcome to attend.

Grow Group

A grow group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experienced depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company do come along.

You will have an opportunity to meet others, share your problems in confidence, get support and make new friends. All are welcome.

Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown at 3 pm every Monday. For further information please contact Harriet.

Lourdes

Deposits are now required from all who intend travelling with the parish pilgrimage to Lourdes from August 13 to August 18. There are also some seats still available.

ICA

Congratulations are extended to Aideen Westman, grandchild of Kathleen Westman, who came second in Ireland in the under 8 painting in the Ready Brek competition in conjunction with ICA. Also congratulations to Leanne Deffew, grandchild of Sheila Kearney, who came first in Laois in a written essay (under 12). They both enjoyed a great day in Croke Park on April 14, sponsored by Ready Brek, and received lovely prizes.

Three ladies from the guild will be away in Tunisia for a week and are wished well. A very helpful talk was given at the last guild meeting by a member of the grow organisation.

The annual outing was discussed and more details will be available for the next meeting.

The federation AGM is being held in the community centre in Rosenallis on Wednesday, May 19. The charity for the year is Kolbe House. The council meeting will be in the Heritage Hotel on Saturday May 29.

GAA News

U-16 football --Mountmellick’s u-16 footballers continued their unbeaten run in this year’s league as they recorded a 2-10 to 0-8 victory over Portlaoise at Parc Acragar on Friday night, April 23.

The first half was evenly contested with a Mountmellick goal being the difference between the sides. In the second half the home side began to dominate in most sectors and ran our deserving winners.

Team: Jason Hogan, Eoghan O’Neill, Gearoid Hanrahan, Darren McDermott, Ciaran Rochford, Niall Gorman, John O’Loughlin, David Tynan 0-1, Colm Coss 0-2, Michael Carroll, Diarmuid Flaherty 1-3, Gary Kirwan 0-1, Eoin Gorman 1-1, Brian Whelan, Kevin Donoher, Shane Shortall 0-2, Donnacha Hanlon, Colm Hanlon, Shane Carter and Ronan Dempsey.

All Ireland camogie final Parc Acragar, Mountmellick was a hive of activity on Saturday, April 24 as both juvenile A & B colleges camogie finals were hosted by Mountmellick GAA Club.

In the A final Colaiste Bride, Enniscorthy had an easy win over Presentation, Athenry and in the B final Scarrif Community School, Clare defeated Castlecomer Community School. All present were full of praise of the venue and facilities and full marks to all who keep the grounds in excellent condition. It is fast gaining a reputation nationwide as a top class venue.

Minor hurling - Hard luck to Laois minor hurlers as they were defeated by Wexford in the Leinster championship on Saturday evening in Portlaoise. Well done to local player Michael Bermingham who played well at corner back for Laois.

Juvenile Hurling

Mountmellick played Slieve Bloom Ballyfin in a challenge game on Sunday, April 18 in Acragar. The match started at a great pace with some great ground hurling played by both teams. The first ten minutes of each half were all ground hurling. The half time score was Mountmellick 1-2, Slieve Bloom/Ballyfin 1-0.

The second half was delayed by a hail storm, but when the match restarted it was every bit as good as the first. Slieve Bloom/Ballyfin came back strongly in this half but the boys and girls in blue stuck to their guns and notched up a few more scores to win the game. Final score, Mountmellick 4-5, Slieve Bloom/Ballyfin 2-3.

Oisin Challoner, James Quigley, David Whelan, Rachel Williams, Luke Reidy and Michael McDermott starred for Mountmellick.

Ladies Mini Marathon

People needed to walk in the ladies mini marathon on Monday, June 7 in aid of St Vincent’s Hospital Benefit Fund. If you are interested please contact Elsie McDonald at the hospital.

Comhaltas

Classes continue every Tuesday evening as everyone prepares for the Laois Fleagh to be held on Sunday June 6. All entries must be with the secretary by Friday May 14. Grupai ceoil, and u-15 will have practice sessions every Sunday from 8 pm to 9 pm in the GAA Centre.

Ladies Basketball

Mountmellick ladies basketball club would like to thank all their supporters at the Top Four recently.

Dyslexia Association

The Laois branch of the Dyslexia Association held a cabaret in the Mellick Inn on Friday April 16. They express their thanks to the parents, friends and all those who helped and to all their sponsors for the support and help. A very enjoyable night was had by all. All funds raised are for the workshop for dyslexia children.

Late Mrs Metcalfe

The news of the death of Mrs Vera Metcalfe of Wolfe Tone Street and formerly of O’Moore Street on Saturday April 24 occasioned much grief.

Removal from St Vincent’s Church of Ireland Chapel of Repose to St Paul’s Church took place on Monday evening. Funeral service was held at 2.30 pm on Tuesday in St Paul’s Church with burial afterwards in the adjoining churchyard.

Mrs Metcalfe is mourned by her sons Sandy, Ken and Ivan, family, relatives and friends to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended.
