Under-16s in championship final

Well done to Mountmellick’s under-16 footballers who have qualified for the semi-final of the ‘A’ championship by virtue of a thrilling win over Portlaoise on Friday night, July 23. Portlaoise played with the wind in the first half and produced their best football to lead by 1-5 to 0-3.

Mountmellick, too, had their chances in that half and with a bit of luck could have scored a few goals. Things were to get worse for Mountmellick as early in the second half, Portlaoise scored a second goal which to most of the large attendance seemed to signal the end for the blues.

However the players had other ideas and staged a remarkable recovery. Colm Coss scored a great goal to spark a revival in which the Mountmellick side kicked five great points. With time running out Colm once again shook off his markers and drilled the ball into the back of the Portlaoise net to give Mountmellick a dramatic win on a final score of 2-8 to 2-7.

They now play Graiguecullen in the semi-final. All the team played their part in this victory. After having a disappointing first half they showed what they are capable of with a powerful finish.

Leinster GAA/Playstation Summer Camp

Boys and girls from Mountmellick GAA Club and neighbouring clubs came together last week to make up the largest summer camp in the county with 165 in attendance. Despite the mixed weather they all enjoyed the training and games provided by the enthusiastic coaches led by Ciaran Muldowney.

All the players were kitted out with playing and hopefully armed with many new skills. Once again the grounds of Mountmellick GAA Club and its facilities contributed towards a very enjoyable week for all. Thanks to all the coaches and to you the parents for your support.
