Second Thorny Rose Competition
The second Thorny Rose competition to be held in Mountmellick takes place on Friday, April 2, at 8.30pm in The Mellick Inn in aid of the Rehab Foundation.
As well as a lot of craic and fun, there will be music by Breech from Clonaslee. Admission is 5 and tickets are available from Ann Delaney, O’Gorman’s, The Mellick Inn and on the night at the door.
The winner on Friday night will go forward to the all-Ireland Thorny Rose in City West Hotel on Thursday, April 8. Why not come along for a great night out, support a good cause and bring your friends.
Ivy Cemetery Committee
The committee is holding their annual Churchgate collection in aid of the Ivy Chapel cemetery on Saturday and Sunday, April 3 and 4, and would appreciate your support.
Comhaltas Irish Day
On Monday, April 5, in the sports complex from 10am to 2.30pm. Admission is 2 for members who show membership cards and 8 for non-members. Meanwhile, music classes continue each Tuesday evening in the sports complex with various classes from 6.45 to 9pm with teachers Brian and Fiona Ryan. This year, Mountmellick Comhaltas will again host the Laois Fleadh on the June bank holiday weekend. Tickets are being printed to be sold to raise funds for the fleadh, so all help and support in selling tickets or any other preparations for the fleadh would be appreciated.
Schools Art Competition
Once again a very successful competition was held in conjunction with Mountmellick Drama Festival. This was promoted by arts officer Muireann Ní Chonaill and attracted a large number of entries from the various schools in the area.The drama festival committee express thanks to the arts office for their help and support and to the schools for their continued support. Winning entries were: Under-8 - 1, Fionn Kirwan, The Rock NS; 8-10 years - 1, Matthew Collier, Camross NS; 2, David Dunphy, Banrashrone NS; 3, Ciaran Collier, Camross NS; over 10 years - 1, Ben Storey, The Rock NS; 2, Louise Bergin, The Rock NS; 3, Leona dowling, The Rock NS.
Juvenile GAA
Mountmellick under-12s had a good friendly against St. Paul’s on Saturday, March 20. Played in wet and windy conditions, both teams played some excellent football. St. Paul’s started brightly and scored two goals before Mountmellick got going. However, they replied with 1-2 early in the first half. Half time score was 3-0 to 1-4 in favour of St. Paul’s. In the second half Mountmellick started the better with 2-2 before St. Paul’s got on the scoresheete with a great point from play. Another 1-2 from Mountmellick left them seven points ahead with five minutes left but the last few minutes belonged to St. Paul’s, scoring 3-1. Final score: Mountmellick 4-8 St. Paul’s 6-2 (draw).
Training days and times for the coming season: Under-8, 10 and 12 football, Thursdays, 7-8.15pm; u-12 football league started on Saturday last; u-12 hurling, Wednesdays, 6.30-8pm and on Sundays from 11.30am to 1pm; u-14 football and hurling, Mondays, 7.30-8.30pm; u-14 football league started on Sunday, March 28; u-16 football, Wednesdays, 6.45pm and Sundays at 11am.
Tennis Club
The club is running a multi-sports camp from Tuesday, April 13 to Friday, April 16, for 6-12-year-olds. There will be two camps, one for 4-6-year-olds and one for 6-12-year-olds. These camps will combine instruction with loads of fun activities for all participants. It will be possible to book for one day or for the full camp. Anyone interested can contact Bryan.
Angling Association
The 2004 fly fishing season opened on March 17 and the club is now open for membership - seniors 15, juniors 5. Membership cards are available from Victor Cox’s shop, O’Connell Square, or from the waterkeepers, Tommy Quigley and Simon O’Meara. The rivers are in good condition at the moment, so fishing should be good. All members are urged to keep on the lookout for pollution and report same at the first sign to the waterkeepers or any member of the club.
Glass Bottles
MEG are delighted to announce that outlets for glass bottle recycling are now available at the Statoil station in Irishtown. It should be noted that the following can be recycled free of charge at Kyletalisha tiphead - cardboard, paper, glossy magazines, burnt oil (engine only), batteries, fridges, other electrical goods, glass bottles, aluminium cans, other cans, metal, plastic bottles and clothes (bring clothes in small bags as they are recycled for charitable purposes). Just sort out all the items and put them into the separate containers provided.
Pipe Band
Mountmellick Pipe Band thanks all who supported their annual churchgate collection on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28.
GAA News
Mountmellick intermediate hurlers lost to Ballyfin recently. The game was played in atrocious conditions and the final scsore was 2-8 to 0-7.
Fit Club
The Fitclub continues on Tuesdays in the Owenass hall - 5-7 years, 3.30pm; 8-12 years, 5.35pm. Contact Bryan.
Citizen’s Info
Is in attendance every Wednesday at the MDA, Irishtown, from 10am to noon or may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related issue is welcome to attend.
Grow Group
A Grow group meets each week in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experiences depression or anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company do come along. You will have an opportunity to meet others, share problems in confidence, get support and make new friends. All are welcome. Meetings take place in the MDA, Irishtown, at 3pm every Monday.
