Ladies Football

Sarsfields completed a unique four-in-a-row Laois minor titles when they beat Shanahoe in the 2003 final in Ratheniska on Saturday, December 6 on a score of 5-11 to 4-9. Trailing by four points with eight minutes left, the team put in its usual storming finish to score three goals and a point in the remainder of the match. It was a marvellous game of football with the lead changing hands six times before Sarsfields finally stamped their authority on the outcome to claim another title.

This is the thirteenth Laois championship win by the club since the first U12 championship in 1997. Three players, Claire Conlon, Aoife Cleary and Fiona Whelan have featured on all winning panels and all three were again prominent in Saturday’s achievement. This is the club’s first four-in-a-row county title sequence and is a terrific achievement by any standards. Eleven of the team will be picking up their fourth successive minor medal while only three of Saturday’s team will not be eligible for next year.
