St. Joseph’s Cemetery Mass
Mountmellick's annual cemetery Mass in St. Joseph's cemetery will be held
on this
Saturday, July 19 at 7.30 pm, not Sunday, July 20, Please note the change.
There will be no Mass at 7.30 pm in St. Joseph's Church that evening.
Soccer Club candidate for Lord Mayor
Kevin Conroy is the Soccer Club candidate for Lord Mayor this year. Kevin has been a member of the soccer club since the age of 13, firstly as a player and now as joint treasurer of the Juvenile Club.
The club is at present in the process of developing its own grounds at Bay Road, which will provide the club with fantastic facilities to cater for over 250 juveniles and 50 seniors. The present campaign will be invaluable in helping the club achieve this. It is felt strongly by the club that the most important beneficiaries of this development will be the children of the town.
We look forward to your support in this venture and thanks to all for their support in the past.
Mountmellick Juvenile Soccer Club
The Juvenile Soccer Club will be holding its first meeting of the new season on Tuesday, July 22 in the Town Hall. All committee members please attend. Anyone interested in helping out with teams, please contact Michael or Eamon.
Castlebrack Mass
The annual Mass in Castlebrack cemetery will be celebrated on Friday, July 25 at 7 pm.
Clonaghadoo Mass
The annual Mass in Clonaghadoo cemetery will be celebrated on Sunday, July 27 at 3 pm.
Mountmellick Tennis Club
Times for coaching on Saturdays have changed for some children, a rota bas been set up for coaching supervision starting next Saturday, all parents are asked to check the clubhouse window.
Adults tennis takes place every Monday and Wednesday from 7.30 pm. For more details on joining the club or the activities in the Junior Tennis Academy call Bryan.
Chraity Shop open
The Charity Shop will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 17,18 and 19 from 10 am to noon and from 2 pm to 5 pm. Support appreciated in aid of the Friends of Moore Abbey.
New business
The business community in Mountmellick are pleased to welcome another new business to the town. Gold Star launderette and dry cleaners has commenced business in O'Moore Street and is wished every success. It is great to see a reversal of the trend of business closing which had happened for so long in the town. The business will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm.

GAA Summer Camp
Mountmellick's GAA summer camp takes place in Parc Acragar from Tuesday, July 22 to Friday, July 25. This is a combined camp featuring football, hurling and camogie. It is open to all children from 2nd class up to 6th class.
The cost is €30 per child with family reductions. Each child will receive a T-shirt, a fun size football or all weather sliotar, a baseball cap, sports socks, sports bag and a sport water bottle.
Coaching will take place in Gaelic football, hurling and camogie and the children will enjoy quizzes, bench ball and visits from inter county stars. Application forms can be obtained from Fiona.
Grow Group
A Grow Group has begun in Mountmellick. If you are someone who experiences
depression, anxiety attacks or who is simply in need of company do come along.
You will have an opportunity to meet others, share your problems in confidence,
get support and make new friends. All are welcome.
Meetings will take place in the MDA, lrishtown at 3 pm every Monday. For further information please contact Harriet.
Laois Citizens Information Service
The above will be in attendance every Wednesday at MDA lrishtown from 10 am to 12.30 pm or else may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related problem are welcome to attend.
Rearie Moore Cemetery Mass
The Annual Rearie Moore Cemetery Mass will take place at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22.

The guild along with Clonaghadoo and Rosenallis had a lovely days outing to Wicklow, visiting Mount Usher Gardens’ Kilruddery House and Bray. We finished the day with a lovely meal in Jeoll’s (Newlands Cross). The weather was lovely and everyone enjoyed a great day.
Soccer
Alan Kearney, son of Paschal and Helen Kearney, Cork has left to take up a four year contract with Everton on Monday July 7. A farewell party was held in Na Pearsaigs F.C. with all his Mountmellick relations attending. He is wished the best of luck from all.
Labour Party
The Mountmellick Labour Party branch wish to thank all who assisted at and contributed to our recent Church gate collection.
Ardara Hill Walking Club, Glendalough trip.
A trip to Glendalough is organised for next Sunday. This outing is suitable for both sightseers and also for walkers. For walkers a nine mile walk is planned and for those not keen on the long walks there are other options. The bus will leave Cadamstown at 9 a.m. and there will be a pick up point in Mountmellick at 9.30a.m. For further details and to book for this call Joan Roche by Friday July 18. New members welcome.
Fraughan Sunday Walk
Traditionlly Fraughan Sunday or Lugnasa (the last Sunday in July) is when local people went to the Slieve Blooms to pick Fraughan berries, dance at cross roads and enjoy other outdoor entertainment. You are invited (new members welcome) to take the opportunity of the Special Day and discover the mysterious Clear Lake and the panormaic beauty of Gorteennamale valley in the Slieve Bloom mountains.
The Ardara Hillwalking Club have organised a family 3 mile walk (two and a half hours). Wear comfortable waterproof footwear as part of the walk is on blanket bog track that is soft and wet in places. Getting there: A bus leaves Cadamstown at 2.30p.m.. Book your place (fare: l3) on the bus by contacting Joan Roche (0509)37967 by Friday July 25. On return to Cadamastown that evening, you are welcome to join in a fundraising Barbecue.
Ahtletics
Mountmellick A.C. athlete Mandy Bloomer opened her track and field season on Tuesday July 8 in Tullamore Harriers, in warm conditions ideal for sprinting. She guessed in the junior mens 100m sprint and won in a time of 12.87 seconds. She followed this up with a time of 13.35 seconds finishing 6th in the Senior Men’s 100m sprint.
Mandy’s main event, the 400m hurdles, was not on the programme, therefore she raced as a guest in the 400 meters, while the men and women of Tullamore Harriers competed in the 4X400m relay. Mandy ran her first 400m of the season in a good time of 58.9 seconds, being pushed in the final 100m by the senior men., but coming away with a strong finish to win.
On Sunday last she competed for Tullamore Harriers as a guest in the National
Senior Mazda League Round 1, Division 1, held in Cork, in warm and humid conditions.
The first event was the 4X100m. Mandy ran the first leg getting off to a bistering
start and with a handing over a smooth baton change to Ailson Quinn who mintained
the stong led down the back straight. The exchange to last leg runner Michelle
Gorman brought home the victory for Tullamore harriers ladies 4X100m squad
and the points.
Later that day Mandy competed in the 400m and ran a strong and controlled race to come home in 2nd position with a strong finish in 58.80seconds.
