Special Olympics art exhibition
Local primary school children and adults have submitted artwork for the Special Olympics “Paint the Feeling” art exhibition.
The artwork is being displayed throughout Mountmellick in June in various
shop windows - Bank of Ireland, the MDA doctors’ waiting rooms, primary schools
and the library.
Many thanks to all who have submitted work, making the people of Mountmellick
aware of the visit later this month of 41 visitors from Peru who will stay
in Mountmellick for five or six days.
Special Olympics Meetings
Meetings of Mountmellick host town committee members, families and volunteers will continue each monday night at 8.30pm in the Macra hall, Patrick Street, until the Peruvian delegation arrives on Sunday, June 15.
The Rock Juvenile GAA
Training times for juveniles - under-8s, 10s, 12s and 16s, Monday nights at 7pm; u-14s, Tuesdays nights, 7pm. New players welcome to come along for all age groups.
Game Preservation And Gun Club
Will hold a meeting for new members in the Owenass hall on Friday, June 13, at 8pm.
Citizens Info Service
Will be in attendance every Wednesday at MDA, Irishtown, from 10am to 12.30pm, or else may be contacted at the Portlaoise office. Anyone who would like help with tax problems, social welfare entitlements, health, housing or any related problem is welcome to attend.
Juvenile GAA
Football training - under-8 and 14 training on Thursdays from 7 to 8pm; u-16s on Thursdays from 6.30 to 8pm; u-12s train on Thursdays from 7 to 8pm instead of Fridays. Hurling training - u-16s on Monday from 6.30 to 8pm; u-8s, 10s and 12s on Wednesdays from 7 to 8pm.
Lough Derg
A three-day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 4, 5 and 6. For further details please contact Maura. A deposit is required.
Town Decorated
Our guests from Peru will arrive on June 14. The town will be specially decorated for the occasion. We hope to see a special effort by the business community and town residents towards decorating their premises and estates. The Peruvian colours are red and white and flags will be on sale. Active Retirement Group
Mountmellick and Ballinakill groups joined together to present a variety show for the patients of St. Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, May 28. The show was very enjoyable and was a great success. Ann Matthews, chairperson of Mountmellick group, thanked all who took part in the show. She mentioned special thanks to Kathleen Cussen who presented the show and gave so much of her time to the group.
Fianna Fail
Mountmellick Fianna Fáil cumann would like to thank everyone who contributed to their national collection on the weekend of May 17-18.
Rock GAA
The under-12s, in their best display in the league to date, defeated St. Joseph’s at The Rock on Friday, May 23. The visitors, assisted by the breeze in the opening half, led 3-2 to 1-3 at the break. A great second half performance by the Rock enabled them to score a three points victory - 3-9 to 3-6.
