All-Ireland Volleyball success for Mountmellick C.S.
Volleyball is the game for the Junior Girls from Mountmellick Community School!
They along with their supporters, led by Cheerleaders Eimear Corcoran and
Fiona McEvoy, travelled to Naas last Friday in a bid to win their first junior
title. The match ended in a thrilling finish with little or nothing between
the teams.
The opposition were old school rivals St.Raphaels, Loughrea who proved to
be formidable opponents on the day. M.C.S. took an early lead with strong
serving from Rebecca Colbert. Loughrea settled but were always behind in the
first set. Gemma Bergin served out the first set in style to take it 25-16.
Again, Mountmellick took the lead in the second set with some steady serving
from Megan Kearney and Samantha Forde. Loughrea, now more determined, dug
their heels in and fought back while the Mountmellick girls began to feel
the "shakes" and found it difficult to stay in control of the match.
Raphael's took the set 25-16 despite the steadying influence of Colette Dooley
and Therese Weston.
Set three and it was all to play for again. M.C.S. were in the lead at the
change over and looked set to cruise for victory but Loughrea rose to the
challenge and fought back point by point. Partly due to the tenacious spirit
of Sylvia Lee, Mountmellick stayed in the game. At this point the Mountmellick
supporters including school principal Mr.Gaughran, Ms. Leonard and Ms Shortall
were on the edge of their seats trying to rally the M.C.S. girls for one last
effort. At match point to Loughrea, coach Helena Dunne took a time-out, rallied
the troops, won the next point and team captain Laura Joyce played a captains'
role by serving the next four points to win the match and take the title.
Jubilation all round for a victory well deserved by this young second year
team managed by Laura Bennett.

Road to St Vincent's launched
NEXT week sees the launch of 'The Road to St Vincent's Mountmellick', a book
of short stories compiled by the Laois Writers and residents of St Vincent's
Hospital, Mountmellick.
The project was devised last Christmas by Chris Dalton, who approached the
Laois Writers with the idea of recording the stories of some of the residents
of St Vincent's.
An enthusiastic response was received from the writers, and after attending
a workshop with author Vincent McDonnell, they visited the hospital to listen
and record the stories.
Alice Taylor is to officially launch the book on Friday, May 3 at St Vincent's
Hospital where the residents art exhibition will also be opened.
The book will be on sale in the hospital and local shops at a cost of €5. The exhibition will continue until the end of May as part of the Bealtaine Festival.
