Emo defeat clinches title for Mountmellick

MOUNTMELLICK United were crowned Counties Major champions on Saturday without
kicking a ball.
Emo Celtic had to beat Abbeyleix Athletic to pip Mountmellick by a point and their failure to do so left the door open for United to clinch a double last night (Tuesday, May 21) by beating Sheriff in the rescheduled Sheeran Cup final at Tolka Park.
After handing Mountmellick a shock league defeat over a week earlier, in-form Abbeyleix were intent on doing to same to Emo and wrecking their title hopes.
In the first half they took the lead after 40 minutes when ace striker Niall Wallace beat Emo 'keeper Michael Kirwan.
Philip Peacock made a successful return between the post for Abbeyleix by saving a Karl Brogan penalty.
Brogan also hit the post and crossbar but Emo equalised when Thomas Lynch deflected past his own 'keeper in the 69th minute.
Abbeyleix struck for the winner when Kevin Waite created an opening for Niall Wallace to score his second and end Emo's dream of a first ever Major title.

One hundred and sixteen children were joined by family, sponsors, relatives, friends and teachers to celebrate their Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, May 19 in St Joseph's Church.

Dunphy administered the Sacrament to the children from the four schools in
the parish.

The newly launched book 'The Road to St Vincent's, Mountmellick' is now on sale in the following shops in the town - Avonmore, Eamon Comerford's, Bentley;s, O'Gorman's, Maire Dunne's, Emmet Stores, the flower shop, McElwee's, Albert White's and the parish office at a cost of £5. Proceeds to the hospital.
The book is a collaboration between the patients in the hospital and the Laois writer's group and chronicles times past in Ireland particularly around Laois and Offaly and is a delight to read.

Football: Mountmellick had a hard earned win over Abbeyleix in the Div 2
league on Sunday at Acragar. The town side were behind by 1 point at half
time 0-4 to 0-3 and succeeded a set back by conceding a goal on the resumption.
However, the lads settled down to play some good football and kicked some
great points to win by 0-11 to 1-6. The championship is in 2 weeks time so
all players are urged to put in the effort.
Scorers: Jarleath Chaloner 0-4, Donncha O'Mahony 0-3, Ricky Kelly 0-2, Mark
Turner 0-1, Gordon Lalor 0-1. The junior side had a good win over Stradbally
during the week on a score of 2-7 to 0-10.
Féile Football
Mountmellick's u 14 footballers had a first round win over Ballyfin last week by 4 - 9 to 4 - 2 in the Feile na Gael competition. However, they were beaten by Stradbally Parish Gaels on Wednesday last in the semi final by 1-11 to 0-6. The lads battled hard but the wind played a big part as Stradbally built up a good half time lead.
