Sarfields U 14 team had a magnificent victory over Portlaoise in the long delayed third round championship match played in Portlaoise on Thursday last, winning by 1-8 to 0-2.
This was the best performance of the year by this young squad and is a great reflection on the coaching work by Grace Weston, Aileen O'Loughlin and Emma McEvoy who had given a lot of time and energy to the U12s and U14s this year.
The team has come a long way since losing league matches early in the year and their participation in the All-Ireland feile tournament in July against top class opposition Wexford and Kerry was a major factor in their enhanced performances of late.
Team: Helena Carroll, Jenny McEvoy, Laura Quigley, Amy Grehan, Gemma Bergin, Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Julieanne Culleton, Colette Dooley, Claire O'Loughlin, Therese Weston, Aine McEvoy, Emma Hayden, Rachel Mullen, Joanne Scott, Sarah Williams, Subs: Rosemary Bermingham, Helen Fitzpatrick, Lisa Clinton, AislingWalsh, Martina Cripps, Edel Gilligan, Michelle O'Loughlin, Caroline Lynch.
The U6 squad picked up their third brace of points on Wednesday when they struggled to overcome Crettyard by 2-8 to 3-1. The last match of the league stage of the championship is against Shanahoe and is down for Wednesday evening. With three wins to date, Sarsfields are through to the semi-finals, so the remaining game will decide first and second placings.
Team: Laura Bennett, Colette Dooley, Mary Hyland, Siobhan Fitpatrick, Fiona Whelan, Aine McEvoy, Patrice Deffew, Claire O'Loughlin, Aoife Cleary, Olwyn Farrell, Joanne Scott, Claire Conlon, Mags McEvoy, Rachel Mullen.
The club extends best wishes to Aoife O'Loughlin who has left to take up an appointment in China where she will be working with the Department of Foreign Affairs attached to the Irish Embassy in Bejing.
