Christmas Shop
A Christmas craft fair has opened until Sunday, December 22 in the premises vacated by Lifestyle Mobility in Sarsfield Street opposite St Joseph's Church. This fair includes many beautiful seasonal crafts including candle arrangements, centre pieces, table arrangements, Christmas garlands and Christmas cards as well as paintings and pottery.
All of the crafts are handmade by the clients of Aras Eoghain in Portlaoise. Aras Eoghain is a centre for people with sensory and physical disabilities and is attended by people from both Laois and Offaly.
The fair will be open on a daily basis from 11 am to 5 pm and will be staffed by the clients of Aras Eoghain.
Christmas Tree Committee
Santa Claus will come to Mountmellick on Sunday, December 22 and will be in the Concert Hall from 3 pm to see all the girls and boys.

Christmas Concert
A Christmas concert in aid of St Vincent's Hospital Patients' Benefit Fund will be held in the hospital on Thursday, December 19, starting at 8 pm. This will feature Dr Larry Fullam and the Portarlington Singers. Admission is £10. with cheese and wine served at the interval. Tickets are available from the hospital.
Christmas Bingo
This takes place in the Owenass Hall on Sunday nights at 8.30 pm. Prizes include hamper, turkeys and hams and £1620. guaranteed every Sunday.
P.T.A.A .Magazine
This is an informative and interesting magazine with news and views for all the family. The magazine carries events such as sports competitions, youth weekends, pioneer pilgrimage abroad, pioneer annual concert. the national ball, pages for teenagers and children, Readori and lots more. It is published monthly and there are eleven issues per year. Orders which can be placed with Ollie Kelly are now being taken for next year.
Carol Service
Mountmellick Methodist Church will be holding their annual Carol Service in the church on Sunday, December 22 at 7pm. Members of the congregation will be taking part and children are invited to come dressed as Kings or Shepherds. If anyone wishes to bring a very small gift to go with other gifts of toiletries etc for the folks in St. Vincent's Hospital it would be most appreciated. A warm welcome awaits everyone. A mince pie supper will be served afterwards.
Comhaltas
The AGM of Mountmellick branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri was held recently. The Chairman Peter Culleton presided. Annual reports were given by the secretary Margaret Culliton, treasurer Breda Culleton. The Chairman in his address was very happy with the progress of the past year and thanked Robert Gleeson for his great work with the young musicians.
The branch is very proud of the success of members at County, Leinster and National level especially Mairead Furlong, Shane Furlong and Susan Millar.

Mountmellick Community School Christmas Carol Service
On December 10, Mountmellick Community School held their annual Christmas Carol Service in St. Joseph’s Church. Students, staff and various members of the community attended the service. The atmosphere in the Church that night was both peaceful and reverent. The students and teachers participation in carols, drama and mediation was beautiful. A special thank you goes out to all the people who organised and took part in the service. We would also like to thank all the people who came to share in the carol service. We wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas.
Ladies Football
Last Saturday’s Laois Minor final between Sarsfields and Shanahoe was called off on Friday night due to the death of Conor Davis. It will be played at some date in early January.

Ladies Football: The seniors and juniors were in action last week and both came through their respective matches successfully.
On Tuesday the seniors had big win over Granard CS in Acragar in the Leinster Post Primary Schools quarter final by 7-14 to 1-4. They have how qualified for the Leinster semi final against the winners of group 2 and 3. This game will be played in the second week in January.
The junior squad continued on their winning streak as they also won well against Borris VS on Wednesday. This win sees them into the Leinster quarter final against St. mary’s of Drogheda.
These victories mean that the girls football teams end the term with a 100% record of wins after ten games, a winning sequence which includes the All Ireland Vocational Schools title in November.
The teams have no intention of resting on their laurels as they will be facing two tough semi final and quarter final games very soon after returning from the Christmas break.

Christmas Draw
Butler’s Pharmacy ran a free draw for a DVD player for a few weeks prior to Christmas. The winner of the DVD player was Ms. Geraldine Moore, Garryhinch. Wishing all our customers a happy Christmas.
