Civic reception planned for visiting Peruvians

Details of the Civic Reception for the visiting Peruvian Special Olympics team were discussed at the Mountmellick town Council meeting held this week.

A total of 27 athletes and visitors from Peru will stay in Mountmellick for the duration of the Special Olympic Games.

The Town Council agreed that a contribution would be made for the provision of a civic reception in the town for the visitors.

Mountmellick Pioneers make it two in a row

For the second year running, Mountmellick Pioneer Centre has received a Graham na Readoiri award for it's achievements throughout the last year. The award was received by Honorary Secretary Sheila Kearney on behalf of the Centre at the national ceremony, held in St Francis Xavier Church in Dublin last month.

Ms Kearney said that the centre are very pleased with the award, and will continue in their attempts to appeal to younger people to join up.

"The Church was packed for the award ceremony, with members from all around Ireland attending. This is our second year to win the award, which was given following the allocation of marks for achievements by assessors who came to visit us. Last year, we held outings to various parts of the country, including pilgrimages to Knock. We were also involved in presenting gold and silver achievements pins to members of the community. We are still trying to attract young members, though, and it's very difficult to do this. With the modern trend of drinking among teenagers, it's hard to persuade them to consider something else."
