Mountmellick Drama Festival makes welcome return
The Mountmellick Drama Festival, which was cancelled last year due to the Foot and Mouth crisis, makes a welcome return to the stage from Mach 18th to 25th in the CYMS Concert Hall, Mountmellick.
The Drama Festival will be launched at the Mountmellick Credit Union Offices, Sarsfield Street, Mountmellick at 8:30p.m. on Thursday, March 7, Laois Arts Officer, Muireann ni Chonaill is expected t attend. The event's main sponsor in Mountmellick Credit Union.
Spread over eight nights of live theatre, drama groups from around Ireland will compete for points to reach the All-Ireland Finals.
The drama groups are presenting plays by well-known Irish Playwrights such as John B Keane and Bernard Farrell. 'Sive' is being presented by the Castlewood Players Drama group from Clare on March 18th and a second John B Keane play, 'Many Young Men of 20' will be presented by the Newmarket Drama group from Cork on March 23rd. Bernard Farrell's Play 'Last Apache Reunion will be presented by Carlow Little Theatre group on March 25th.
Other plays include 'Twelve Angry men' Presented by the Classic Revival Group from Dublin on March 19th. 'The Thaw' presented by Bunclody Kilmshall Drama Group on March 20th. 'Angels in America' presented by Silken Thomas Players from Kildare on March 21st, 'The Lonesome West' presented by Nenagh Players from Tipperary on March 22nd and 'In Memory of water' presented by Estuary players for Dublin on March 24th.
Council meeting called off
A MOUNTMELLICK area meeting scheduled to take place on Monday, March 4 was called off because their were insufficient numbers attending to make up a quorum.
Just two of the four Mountmellick councillors - Cllr John Moloney and Cllr Seamus McDonald turned up to the meeting, with an apology from Cllr Joe Digan and a no-show from Cllr David Goodwin.
The meeting was rescheduled for Monday, March 11.
Chernobyl Children Fundraiser
The annual sponsored cycle for the Chernobyl children is being held on Saturday, April 6. Cards have been issued to cyclists. For further information please contact Jim Halley or Eileen Dunne
