Known for its delicate beauty, Mountmellick Embroidery, stitched on closely-woven white cotton satin 'jean' with white cotton thread has a subtle richness an great elegance. It has been famously described by Jane Houston-Almqvist in 'Mountmellick Work Irish White Embroidery' as a 'glorious tangle of flora Translated into stitchery; a memory of walks which have been and yet to come.'
The hand crafted exhibits, ranging from tablecloths, bedspreads, cushions Christening gowns, pictures and many others are the work of a group of ladies from around the locality who meet every Monday night in Portlaoise to learn and develop the age old craft under the tutorship of Annie Kelly. Having worked together for some eight years, the group have in that time developed and nurtured the craft of Mountmellick embroidery to a very high standard. The revival of the art is attributed to Sr Theresa Margaret McCarty, a Presentation nun from Mountmellick who taught herself the stitches using a Victorian needlework book and she continues to share her expertise today. The origins of Mountmellick embroidery itself have been traced back to between 1830 and 1840 when Johanna Carter introduced the style of work to the area to benefit local women and girls in a time of declining prosperity.

Mountmellick show their championship
Mountmellick 5 …………..Gallen United 0
Mountmellick's first team got off to a flying start in the LJL major Division but the final score line was harsh to Gallen United side who played very well for long periods.
However, on the day Mountmellick fielded a very strong side that included six new players with an average age of 22. They played some very good football and will be hoping to keep this form up for the rest of the season.
Best for Mountmellick was Kevin Conroy, Mark Parkinson, Ray Farrell, Alan Reddin and man of the match Ivan O'Neill. Scorers for Mountmellick were Niall Lynch (two), Paul Lee, Lee Collins and John Kerry.
