First half goals see Mountmellick through

LFL Sheeran Cup, Fourth round

Mountmellick Utd 4......................................................................................Coolraine

Counties Major Division side Mountmellick United prevailed over their Premier opposition as both teams attempted to play football on a mucky pitch.

Mountmellick, bidding to reach the Sheeran decider for the second successive season, started the brighter and scored after just five minutes when a great through ball let Robbie Hibbitts make it 1-0.

For the next ten minutes Mountmellick looked like running riot but Coolraine held fast. Mountmellick relaxed after that but the Tullamore side could make no impression on the home defence.

After 30 minutes a great cross by Paddy Delaney for the home side was left by defenders and attackers alike but Mountmellick full back Kevin Conroy did react and slotted the ball home.

This goal woke Mountmellick up again and excellent goals from Niall Lynch and Paddy Delaney made the half-time score 4-0.

The second half saw Coolraine come out and try to break down the Mountmellick defence but the home side held steady.

In the 65th minute Coolraine were awarded a penalty but goalkeeper Donie O’Mahony made a super save.

In all the second half was just an exercise of going through the motions for Mountmellick. It was a good display by the winners but they will have to concentrate more when they meet teams from higher divisions than Coolraine.

Best for Mountmellick were Owen Smith, Kevin Conroy, Ivan O’Neill and man of the match Paddy Delaney.

Mountmellick: D O’Mahony; K Conroy, I O’Neill, J Turner, A Reddin, O Smith, N Lynch, D Lynch, JP Gormley, R Hibbitts, P Delaney. Subs: M Parkinson, J Davis, N Cleary.

Referee: Patsy Pardy.

THE Mountmellick Macra Pantomime Cinderella wound up last Sunday with a full house enjoying the show.

This year’s production was the fourth to come from the talented Macra crew who have been rehearsing the show for months.

Directing the Mountmellick Macra Pantomime this year was Brian Brady, who is also in charge of the music, and the choreographer for the show was Michelle Wise. Alice McCann lent her expertise with costumes and John McDonald was in charge of musical accompaniment.

Alice McCann, as well as showing her skills with a needle and thread backstage, is also the Chairperson of Mountmellick Macra. "The show was a great success with great turnout on each of the five nights. Feedback about the show has been very positive. We are particularly grateful to all of the sponsors who contributed to the show - without them we could not continue," she said.

A raffle was held each night to raise money for the staging of the Pantomime. Lisa Rochford of Graigue, Mountmellick was the winner of a colour television on the night of the grand finale.

The cast of the Mountmellick Macra pantomime was as follows:
