About Mountmellick
Mountmellick has a population of circa 3,000, this growing family town has a powerful community spirit enhancing and preserving the quality of life in Mountmellick. The town is small enough to retain the charms of Irish rural life, while large enough to provide many "urban" services such as transport, education and sports facilities. Mountmellick remains a safe and peaceful place to live.
Mountmellick is an ideal setting for relocation of businesses or families. The town’s central location along the N80 between Portlaoise (6 miles) and Tullamore (14 miles) is within commuting distance of major industrial areas being only 52 miles from Dublin on the N7 and 7 miles from the train stations Portarlington and Portlaoise (incorporating both Southern and Western mainlines). Local employment includes 170 persons employed in the MDA Business Park. Mountmellick Textiles and Standex Ireland are two important local employers along with the numerous shops and services in the town.
The town is encompassed by the Owenass and Barrow rivers along which various river ban walks are available for recreation and or fishing. The Slieve Bloom Mountains and the bogs surrounding the town are unspoiled natural resource ideal for walking, driving, cycling or adventure.
Since the industrial decline over a century ago depicted in Mountmellick Heritage Trail, Mountmellick has not seen such levels of confidence and exceptions as at present. Mountmellick Community School was completely renovated in 1992 with up-to-date facilities and resources. An excellent community sports facility was opened in 2000, which will help to add to the success of the large and varied number of sporting clubs in the town. Apart from sports, Mountmellick offers a multitude of leisure pursuits ranging from photography to fishing. The building of pleasant housing developments around Mountmellick at the beginning of the new century has created a sense of energy in the town and ensures Mountmellick’s advancement will continue for the decades to come.
