Descendents of Joseph Beale

Pictured below is Laura Beale and her husband Samuel Howie, their children Francis, Edwin, Mary and Alfred, taken about 1896-7.

Laura (Beale) Howie's daughter Mary (b1880, the girl in the photo), wrote a book in the early 1950's of her reminiscences of growing up in an hospitable quaker household in Melbourne, and there are many descriptions of her warm loving family, and of her mother's wisdom & generosity. After her death, Laura's younger brother Tavy (Octavius) described her life as 'kind'.

Alfred Beale Howie, the young boy standing behind her. Alfred named his eldest daughter Laura.
